Engr. Md. Ali Zulquarnain

Professor, Department of Nuclear Science & Engineering (NSE)

Electrical Engineering graduate Md. Ali Zulquarnain earned his degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1980. Prior to his retirement as the commission's Chairman in 2017, he worked for the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) for almost 36 years. He made a significant contribution in a number of ways over the course of his lengthy professional career at BAEC, including for about ten years as the reactor manager, to the building, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the only nuclear installation in the nation, the 3-MW TRIGA Mk-II Research Reactor at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Savar, Dhaka.

Engineer Professor Zulquarnain received in-depth instruction in and exposure to various facets of nuclear technology at various renowned nuclear laboratories and installations around the world, including the Los Alamos National Lab, the Argonne National Lab, the Sandia National Lab, the Oakridge National Lab, the Orai Engineering Center, Japan, the Republic of Korea's KAERI, India's BARC & NPCBL, and Indonesia's BATAN-PPTN. He participated in the execution of a number of the government's ADP initiatives while employed at AERE in a variety of positions, including that of Project Director.

With two units of VVER-1200 reactors, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) Project is currently being developed as part of a government-to-government agreement between Bangladesh and the Russian Federation. Engr. Zulquarnain was appointed a Member (Planning) of BAEC in December 2011, and since that time, he has played a significant role in its development. He made a substantial contribution to the creation of the project's Technical Assignment document as well as several other contract agreements.

From 2014 until 2017, Engr. Zulquarnain served as a part-time professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at BUET, where he co-taught a course on nuclear engineering (NE-439) with the late Professor Abdur Rashid Sarkar, PhD.Additionally, he gave multiple lectures in a variety of public courses that the Institute on Nuclear Power Engineering, BUET, organized. He has given numerous talks on nuclear technology to a variety of audiences, including decision-makers, professionals, journalists, students, and members of the public, in addition to being invited to speak by various national and international bodies.

 

Since his retirement from BAEC as its Chairman, Engr. Zulquarnain is involved in teaching as a part-time faculty member of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department of the Military Institute of Science and Technology, Mirpur Cantonment, Dhaka. He has published a number of papers in national and international journals, conference proceedings, and IAEA TECDOCs.
